For appropriately selected patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer, bladder preservation can be a curative treatment option, according to a new clinical guideline from the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). The recommendations support trimodal therapy (maximal transurethral resection of bladder tumor followed by chemoradiation for bladder preservation) as an alternative to radical cystectomy and provide guidance on the use of radiation therapy after surgery and for patients with metastatic or symptomatic disease. The guideline, ASTRO’s first focused specifically on radiation therapy across bladder cancer care, was published by Ballas et al in Practical Radiation Oncology.
A lower-cost chemoimmunotherapy approach including triple oral metronomic chemotherapy (TMC) combined with ultra-low-dose immunotherapy termed TMC-I could extend survival for patients with advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in resource-limited countries, according to investigators from India who reported results with the novel regimen at the 2026 ASCO Annual Meeting.1
In the large, platform-based, independent validation study CATALINA, published by Dixon-Douglas et al in The Lancet Oncology, two artificial intelligence (AI)-derived computational tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (cTIL) models, which were deployed without retraining or modification, provided statistically significant prognostic information and improved risk discrimination beyond clinicopathologic variables alone in patients with early-stage triple-negative breast cancer.
Cancer mortality associated with alcohol use has risen in the United States, disproportionately affecting males and adults aged at least 55 years, according to a population-based observational trend analysis published by Jani et al in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas.
The American Urologic Association (AUA), in partnership with the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) has released an amendment for 2026 to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Non–Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer (NMIBC) Guideline, published in The Journal of Urology. The amendment introduces 40 new and updated recommendations regarding risk stratification, pathologic terminology, biomarkers, surveillance strategies, and treatment options.
