Ethan Basch, MD, MSc, FASCO
This year’s meeting will be held in San Francisco and online on September 27 and 28. Dr. Basch will receive the award on Friday, September 27 at 10:45 AM PST.
"Dr. Basch has dedicated his career to ensuring the delivery of high-quality cancer care for all patients," said Raymond U. Osarogiagbon, FACP, MBBS, FASCO, Chair of the 2024 ASCO Quality Care Symposium Planning Committee. “Thanks to dedicated professionals like him, we will continue to develop innovative solutions to cancer care delivery problems.”
Dr. Basch serves as Physician-in-Chief at the North Carolina Cancer Hospital and Chief of Oncology at the University of North Carolina, where he is a Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Health Policy. He has dedicated his career to integrating the patient voice into cancer drug development and care delivery.
His research group established that patient-reported outcome (PRO) surveys significantly improve the detection of patient's symptomatic adverse events during clinical trials. In clinical care, his team determined that monitoring patients with electronic PROs and flagging concerning symptoms for the care team led to improved quality of life, reduced hospitalizations, and lengthened survival. His group developed the National Cancer Institute's PRO-CTCAE, a system for collecting patient-reported adverse events, which is now used in hundreds of clinical trials worldwide.
He has collaborated closely with governmental and professional organizations on approaches to incorporate PROs programmatically, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the National Quality Forum, the American Cancer Society, and ASCO. He has served on the National Cancer Institute Board of Scientific Advisors, the ASCO Board of Directors, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute Methodology Committee, and the Editorial Board of JAMA. In addition to co-leading the Cancer Care Quality T32 training program and mentoring over 30 faculty and trainees, he is Director of the Cancer Outcomes Research Program at the University of North Carolina.
An ASCO Special Award, the Joseph Simone Quality Care Award was established in 2016 and created in honor of Joseph V. Simone, MD, FASCO, to recognize his significant and enduring contributions to the quality and safety of cancer care.
Nominations for the 2025 ASCO Special Awards are being accepted until July 15, 2024.
