Dr. Bertagnolli was the 16th Director of the National Cancer Institute, a role she held from October 2022 until November 2023. She was also ASCO President from 2018 to 2019.

In her time helming the NIH, Dr. Bertagnolli focused on community engagement’s role in improving health outcomes, a re-envisioning of the National Library of Medicine, women’s health research, and the study of long COVID.

“While I leave NIH unable to see these initiatives and more through to fruition, I am optimistic that they will continue under new leadership. I know the new administration shares my desire to improve U.S. life expectancy…. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to serve at NIH and am confident that the people of this amazing agency will help the next NIH Director succeed in driving a research agenda to improve the health of all Americans,” wrote Dr. Bertagnolli.
