Douglas S. Tyler, MD, MSHCT, FSSO
The Society ofSurgical Oncology (SSO) recently announced its 2021–2022 elected Executive Council Officers, including its new President, Douglas S. Tyler, MD, MSHCT, FSSO. Dr. Tyler currently holds the John Woods Harris Distinguished Chair in Surgery at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He is also Adjunct Professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in the Department of Surgical Oncology.
Dr. Tyler’s clinical practice focuses on gastrointestinal cancers and melanoma. He has published more than 260 peer-reviewed manuscripts and over 75 book chapters. His research interests focus on surgical oncology, especially melanoma.

Serving as SSO’s President-Elect is Sandra L. Wong, MD, MS, FSSO. Dr. Wong is the William N. and Bessie Allyn Professor of Surgery, Chair of the Department of Surgery at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, and Professor of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. She is an authority in the management of soft-tissue sarcoma, melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and gastrointestinal cancers.
Sandra L. Wong, MD, MS, FSSO
Dr. Wong’s research program has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the American Cancer Society. Her research broadly focuses on the quality of care.
Russell S. Berman, MD, FSSO, has been named SSO Vice President for a 3-year term. Dr. Berman is Professor of Surgery at New York University Grossman School of Medicine, where he is Vice Chair for Surgical Education and Faculty Affairs, Chief of Surgical Oncology, and Director of the General Surgery Residency Program. He has served the SSO in numerous capacities, including 6 years as Chair of the Training Committee.
Russell S. Berman, MD, FSSO
Dr. Berman is a member of the American Board of Surgery Council and sits on several of the board’s committees. He is presently serving a 2-year term as Chair of the Complex General Surgical Oncology Board. For the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer, Dr. Berman functions as a subject matter expert in melanoma.
