Roy L. Silverstein, MD, Begins Term as 2019 ASH President

ROY L. SILVERSTEIN, MD, an expert in platelet and vascular cell biology, as well as clinical nonmalignant hematology and thrombosis, will serve as President of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) for a 1-year term through December 2019.

Dr. Silverstein is Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in Milwaukee, where he also serves as Associate Director for the MCW Cancer Center. Dr. Silverstein is also Senior Investigator for the Blood Research Institute at BloodCenter of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

“Hematology is an exciting and rapidly moving discipline driven by research, innovation, and creative thinking in the clinic and in the laboratory. I am delighted to serve as a leader of the organization that continues to move this field forward,” said Dr. Silverstein. “As President, I look forward to engaging ASH members to examine current hematology training programs and develop innovative pathways to accelerate successful entry of clinicians and researchers into hematology-based careers. Moreover, I am ready to represent ASH members as a forceful advocate for continuing public investments in hematology research and in support of hematology training and practice.”

Prior to his election to ASH’s Executive Committee, Dr. Silverstein served as Editor-in-Chief of ASH’s member news magazine, The Hematologist, chaired the Society’s Committee on Government Affairs, and co-chaired the 2012 ASH Annual Meeting & Exposition Scientific Program. He also chaired the search committees for founding Editors-in-Chief of ASH Clinical News and the Society’s newest journal, Blood Advances.
