A new infographic in the May 2020 print and online issues of JCO Oncology Practice (JCO OP) outlines paths to implementing ASCO’s Patient-Centered Oncology Payment (PCOP) model—an alternative payment model designed to support transformation in cancer care delivery and reimbursement while ensuring that patients with cancer have access to high-quality care. Along with the infographic, the issue features an in-depth overview of recent changes to PCOP and two invited commentaries on the model.

The new infographic also illustrates recent changes to the PCOP model, including its three primary approaches to transforming cancer care—the use of oncology medical homes, performance-based reimbursement, and high-quality clinical pathways—as well as the model’s community-wide approach to delivering care and the two tracks practices can follow to implement PCOP. The infographic also highlights ASCO’s real-world modeling, which projects that PCOP could cut costs by up to 8% across the health-care system.

PCOP was first published in 2015 amid growing concerns over the skyrocketing cost of cancer care. The model aimed to better align practice reimbursement with the services needed to treat people with cancer. In late 2019, ASCO released a revision, ASCO Patient-Centered Oncology Payment: A Community-Based Oncology Medical Home Model, which reflects stakeholder feedback from physicians, administrators, payers, and employers.

The May issue of JCO OP also features the two commentaries, “A Better Path to Value in Cancer Care” and “Collaborating: A Pathway for Better Cancer Care,” which discuss the updates to PCOP and the model’s emphasis on collaboration to improve cancer care.
