Debuting this year, “Your Stories: Conquering Cancer” are unscripted conversations among doctors, patients, and caregivers who have been affected by cancer.
The Conquer Cancer Foundation produced the mini-podcast series through the award-winning StoryCorps organization, a national nonprofit committed to preserving and sharing humanity’s stories. StoryCorps is best known for its weekly National Public Radio (NPR) series and its New York Times best-selling books.
“Patients, doctors, and caregivers are so much more than any title cancer may assign them,” said Nancy R. Daly, MS, MPH, Conquer Cancer’s Executive Vice President and Chief Philanthropic Officer. “Conquer Cancer created this series to capture candid reflections from a range of viewpoints, inspiring people to know cancer can be more than just a villain in their story.”
Among the participants featured in “Your Stories” are Past ASCO President Lawrence H. Einhorn, MD, FASCO, who reveals how he concocted a miracle mix of chemotherapy to cure testicular cancer, and Cancer.Net Editor-in-Chief Lidia Schapira, MD, FASCO, who describes caring for seriously ill patients while raising her children. Conquer Cancer grantees Enrique Soto Pérez de Celis, MD, MSc, and Priscilla K. Brastianos, MD, share emotional stories on what propelled their careers in cancer research.
Tellingly, each exchange forms a parallel narrative: cancer may divide, but it does not conquer. Conquer Cancer will highlight these stories throughout the year online and at the 2018 ASCO Annual Meeting and will invite all people affected by cancer to share their stories as part of the series.
