Your Stories, the podcast series from Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation®, kicks off its third season with a conversation between oncologist Neil Iyengar, MD, and nutrition advocate Nadja Pinnavaia, PhD. The pair have joined forces to help reduce the risk of cancer and share the latest research for maintaining a healthy diet and an active lifestyle.

Dr. Iyengar, a two-time Conquer Cancer grant recipient, is integrating a plant-based meal delivery service into a clinical trial, charting how nutrition affects diagnosis and recurrence in patients with breast cancer. Dr. Pinnavaia formed the meal delivery company Plantable after several of her family members were diagnosed with cancer.

“I didn’t have an awareness of how much lifestyle and environment impact our ability to stave off cancer cell growth, and also increase our odds of surviv[al],” said Dr. Pinnavaia.

Dr. Iyengar wants to learn how important it is for patients to make drastic lifestyle changes, even during stressful cancer treatments.

“We’re just starting to learn more about the biology behind our metabolisms and the promotion of cancer growth,” said Dr. Iyengar. “We can now bring together these fields of tumor and host biology, as well as nutrition, physical activity, and lifestyle, and start to offer interventions.”
