Hernan Vargas, MD
VIRGINIA CANCER SPECIALISTS, an affiliate of The US Oncology Network, has announced Hernan Vargas, MD, has joined its practice. Virginia Cancer Specialists is a cancer care and research center in Northern Virginia with more than 40 years of service to patients.
Dr. Vargas joins Virginia Cancer Specialists with more than 20 years of experience in the care of women with breast cancer and other benign conditions of the breast. Previously, he served as Associate Professor of Surgery at UCLA as well as Director of the Breast Programs at Harbor-UCLA in Los Angeles and at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia. He has contributed to the development of new surgical techniques in breast cancer care and has authored more than 100 scientific publications.
Dr. Vargas is a board-certified surgeon who attended the Alberto Hurtado School of Medicine in Lima, Peru. He completed his residency at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles as well as his fellowship at The National Cancer Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
“Breast cancer patients meet us during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives,” said Dr. Vargas. “For those of us who see this as a calling and not just a job, we have the privilege of helping patients, guiding them at this time when they need it most.”
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Vargas has lectured nationally and internationally. He is the recipient of several awards for leadership and teaching excellence and has been recognized as a “Top Doctor” in breast surgery by Washingtonian magazine, Los Angeles magazine, and Castle-Connolly’s America’s Top Doctors for Cancer. ■
