Robert S. Miller, MD, FACP, FASCO, Joins ASCO as Medical Director for Society's Institute for Quality
Robert S. Miller, MD, FACP, FASCO, Assistant Professor of Oncology and Oncology Medical Information Officer at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, has been named Medical Director of the Institute for Quality (iQ) of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
Dr. Miller is a pioneer in health-related information technology and in 21st Century methods of communicating critical medical information to health providers and patients. A long-time ASCO member and volunteer, Dr. Miller will begin his new position on December 3, 2014.
Role as Medical Director

"Dr. Miller has served ASCO in many integral roles over the years and his leadership and medical knowledge will help guide and revolutionize our continuing effort of improving the quality of cancer care."
The Medical Director will lead a team of more than 30 individuals working with stakeholders across the cancer community to advance iQ's quality initiatives that have the potential to truly transform the health-care industry. These efforts include:
- The Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI)
- QOPI Certification Program (QCP)
- Practice Guidelines
- Performance Measures and Practice Improvement
- CancerLinQ, ASCO's learning health-care system for oncology
"Having been a volunteer since 1999, I am deeply committed to ASCO's mission and am thrilled to serve the Society on a permanent basis," said Dr. Miller. "I look forward to collaborating with ASCO volunteers, the ASCO Board of Directors, and ASCO staff to establish methods, programs, tools and other initiatives that improve the care we provide for people living with cancer."
Long-Time ASCO Member
Since joining ASCO in 1992, Dr. Miller has served the Society in numerous capacities. He has served on the Board of Directors, the Quality of Care Committee, the Clinical Practice Committee, the Cancer Education Committee, the Integrated Media and Technology Committee, and the Health Information Technology Workgroup. Dr. Miller currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Cancer.Net and on the editorial board for the Journal of Oncology Practice. He is widely recognized as an expert on social media for patient education and professional engagement in oncology and has spoken at numerous ASCO meetings on the topic. Dr. Miller received a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO) Award in 2011 and is a past recipient of an ASCO Travel Award from the Conquer Cancer Foundation.
Dr. Miller is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, he served as the President of Sacramento Center for Hematology and Medical Oncology, Inc, and Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Miller is a member of the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Informatics Association. He is also a former member of the Oncology Workgroup of the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT), the Cancer Endorsement Maintenance Steering Committee of the National Quality Forum (NQF), and the Breast Cancer Treatment Guidelines Panel of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN).
Dr. Miller earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine, completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco, a fellowship in Medical Oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine, and received his graduate certificate in biomedical informatics at Oregon Health and Science University.
