As reported in the Journal of Clinical Oncology by Justin E. Bekelman, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, and colleagues, ASCO has endorsed the 2017 American Urological Association (AUA), American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), and Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) joint guideline on care for clinically localized prostate cancer. Endorsement was based on review by an ASCO expert panel. The panel was co-chaired by Dr. Bekelman; Andrew Stephenson, MD, of the Cleveland Clinic; and Karim Touijer, MD, of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
The expert panel determined that the recommendations in the joint guideline were clear, thorough, and based on the most relevant scientific evidence. ASCO endorsed all of the recommendations as written except for two recommendations on cryosurgery; the panel determined there is insufficient evidence to support the use of cryotherapy in this setting. The ASCO panel also offered a series of discussion points to guide practice.
The endorsed guidelines cover the following topics in clinically localized prostate cancer, with 68 specific recommendations.
